Permanent Commission Granted to Women in Army - Armed Forces

Grant to Permanent Commission to Women Officers in Indian Army

In a significant move, the Government of India has Granted Permanent Commission (PC) to Women Officers in the Indian Army. This is a very important decision of Government and it will be one more benefit to women in the Indian army.

Army Permanent Commission Granted to Women

It was bound to happen

Actually, the Government loses the court cases in the Supreme Court where the court directed the government to consider a permanent commission to the women officers in the Indian Army. Supreme Court reprimanded the government of India to give commanding role and permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army.

The then Army chief, General Rawat also said that the Army is all set to place women in combat roles like some other foreign countries are doing.

So it was just a time when the government would announce to grant permanent commission in the Indian Army to women.

Government was reluctant

But due to the nature of the Army and the condition of the army daily fighting the enemy physically and barbarism shown by neighbouring countries, the government was reluctant to place women in all roles and ranks in the Indian Army.

The decision

After much deliberations and discussions, Now Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued the formal Government Sanction Letter on 23rd July 2020 for grant of Permanent Commission (PC) to Women Officers in the Indian Army, paving the way for empowering Women Officers to shoulder larger roles in the organisation.

The order specifies grant of PC to Short Service Commissioned (SSC) Women Officers in all ten streams of the Indian Army i.e Army Air Defence (AAD), Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), and Intelligence Corps in addition to the existing streams of Judge and Advocate General (JAG) and Army Educational Corps (AEC).

In anticipation, the Army Headquarters had set in motion a series of preparatory actions for the conduct of the Permanent Commission Selection Board for affected Women Officers.

The Selection Board will be scheduled as soon as all affected SSC Women Officers exercise their option and complete requisite documentation.

The Indian Army is committed to providing equal opportunities to all personnel including Women Officers to serve the Nation.

Thus in all Indian Armed Forces have given the permanent commission to women officers in their rank.
